Biden signs law banning imports of Russian uranium
US President Joe Biden has signed a law that bans the import of uranium produced in Russia or by Russian companies
This is stated on the White House website.
Biden signed H.R. 1042, Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act, on Monday, May 13. The bill bans the import of unirradiated, low-enriched uranium produced in the Russian Federation or by Russian entity. The law will come into force 90 days after its signing.
According to US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the signing of this law is historic. In his opinion, it will strengthen the energy and economic security of the United States and help eliminate dependence on Russia in the field of civilian nuclear energy.
"The Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act demonstrates the impact and innovation we can achieve through bipartisan cooperation. We are grateful to Congress for its continued support for civil nuclear energy as a vital part of our efforts to build a clean economy in the United States," Sullivan said.
According to the Energy Department, Russia supplied nearly a quarter of the enriched uranium used to fuel the US fleet of more than 90 commercial reactors, making it the first foreign supplier.
These sales bring Russia approximately $1 billion a year, and the White House has said that dependence on Russian uranium sources "poses a risk to the US economy." At the same time, replacing this stockpile could be a challenge and could increase the cost of enriched uranium by as much as 20%.
- On December 12, 2023, it was reported that the House of Representatives voted to restrict imports of enriched uranium to the United States from Russia. The US Department of Energy plans to increase production of low-enriched uranium to reduce dependence on Russia.
- On April 30, reports said that officials of the National Security Council of the White House, the Department of Energy, and other US administration agencies were negotiating restrictions on Russian uranium imports, including a ban.
