Ukraine starts talks with Russia on exchange of prisoners captured in Kursk region
Ukraine and Russia have begun negotiations on the exchange of prisoners captured during the operation in the Kursk region. The exact number of fighters isn't disclosed
The Financial Times reports this with reference to its own sources in Ukrainian intelligence.
The talks between the two countries came after more than a week of fighting in the Kursk region, and, according to Ukraine's Internal Security Service, it was “the largest prisoner capture ever made at one time.”
Currently, Ukraine doesn't disclose the exact number of Russian prisoners captured during the Kursk operation, but government officials and soldiers on the Kursk border told the publication that the number is in the “hundreds.”
"The capture of Russian prisoners is likely to strengthen Kyiv's calls for the return of thousands of its soldiers and civilians who have been captured during Russia's two-and-a-half-year invasion and occupation of large swaths of eastern and southern Ukraine," the statement says.
- On August 14, more than 100 Russian soldiers surrendered to the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Kursk region.
