Russia has launched a disinformation campaign to discredit the new composition of the European Commission, in particular, to sow distrust between Ukraine and its partners

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.

The center states that the key narrative of this campaign is that the new composition of the European Commission will allegedly lead to a “deep political and economic crisis in European countries.”

“One of the main targets is the new EU Commissioner for Enlargement, who will also be responsible for the restoration of Ukraine, the representative of Slovenia, Marta Kos,” the statement said.

The Russians are spreading conspiracy theories about abuses in the accession of new members to the EU and intimidating the public with the consequences of further EU enlargement.

Additionally, Russian propaganda is using the new position of the European Commissioner for Defence to promote the idea of “transforming the EU into a military and political bloc,” thus threatening Europe with a direct military conflict with Russia.

Moreover, the Russians are spreading manipulations regarding the distribution of budgetary flows in the EU.

The Center for Countering Disinformation emphasizes that the aim of this campaign is to provoke a split within the EU, discredit European institutions, and sow distrust between Ukraine and its partners.

  • Last week, a Russian "fake news factory" was exposed, run personally by Putin's deputy chief of staff, Sergey Kiriyenko.
