Russian military movements around Mariupol show key shifts

Petro Andriushchenko, head of the Center for Occupation Studies, noted a recent slowdown in Russian troop movements. Most forces are shifting toward Pokrovsk, with some heading toward Kurakhove and Vremivka

He shared this information during a broadcast on Espreso.

"At the start of this week and the end of last, we’ve observed noticeable changes in enemy movements. On one hand, there’s a clear slowdown in the movement of military equipment and manpower. The presence of military equipment has dropped significantly, while more personnel are being relocated. There are also changes in their directions of advance. Previously, forces moved toward Polohy and Berdyansk, focusing on Volnovakha and the Kurakhove area. Now we see Crimean units leaving, which is evident from their tactical markings – a triangle within a triangle," Andriushchenko explained.

In recent days, he said, Russian columns, primarily consisting of manpower, have been moving through Mariupol toward northern Donetsk. Most are heading to Pokrovsk, while others are turning toward Kurakhove and Vremivka.

"The same pattern applies to newly deployed Russian personnel. Their training period, already short, is now only about 2.5 weeks. The Russians are once again setting records in preparing their 'meat' assaults. These 'Storm V' units, marked with the letter 'V' in rectangles or triangles, are moving toward Kurakhove and Vremivka to support assault operations," he commented.

Andriushchenko concluded that enemy troop rotations are slowing down, and manpower is significantly reduced. Comparing the occupiers' current losses to the reinforcements they can muster, it’s clear they can no longer maintain the same level of assault activity as they did a month ago.

  • On December 4, Andriushchenko stated that the Russians are ramping up recruitment efforts in occupied Ukrainian territories.
  • Meanwhile, the Center for National Resistance reported that Russian forces in these territories have failed to meet their recruitment targets.
