All of Ukraine must be invited to NATO to truly end war, Zelenskyy says
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that real peace is only possible if Ukraine is invited to join NATO within its internationally recognized borders
Zelenskyy shared this in an interview with SBN.
The president stated that there is currently no “global umbrella” or reliable security guarantees for Ukraine outside of NATO. He dismissed claims that Ukraine is trying to drag NATO into a war with Russia as false.
“But if we want to truly end the war, Ukraine needs an invitation to NATO. The invitation must cover the entire territory of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders. This is non-negotiable because it aligns with our constitution and international law. The invitation should be issued for the entire country, while NATO’s actions can apply to the parts of Ukraine we currently control, with future expansion,” Zelenskyy explained.
He emphasized that an invitation to NATO is just the first step and does not equal immediate membership. However, it signals that Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance is on the horizon.
- Earlier, Zelenskyy announced the formation of a new contact group to work on ending the war. This group includes Germany, France, Poland, and the UK, with plans to invite Denmark as well. The first meeting in this format is scheduled for December.
