"Rivne NPP will not become the target of an offensive from Belarus", - Military expert
Oleg Zhdanov believes that, despite the fact that the Rivne NPP is located less than 100 kilometers from the border with Belarus, the Russians do not have a strategic goal of capturing the plant
Zhdanov said this in a commentary to Espreso.West.
"Of course, there may be a situation like with Energodar - when they try to take control of a nuclear plant in order to control our energy system. But the situation with the seizure of other nuclear power plants is significantly different from a potential attack on Rivne. Everything is clear with Chernobyl, the station itself is not working, there is only a storage facility for nuclear waste and a burial ground for the fourth power unit. In fact, this is a bomb in the center of Europe. And Putin seized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in order to blackmail the Western world", he said.
As for the South Ukrainian and Zaporizhzhya stations, the expert says that here one should first of all look at the map. These are two stations that feed the entire south-east of Ukraine.
"If you mention the Novorossiya project, then it is these two stations that supply electricity to the territories that Russia is trying to take under long-term control. With the capture of the North Crimean Canal, they supplied Crimea with water, and with the capture of the coast, they cut off Ukraine from the Black and Azov Seas. These are the tasks that Putin assigned to the so-called "Russian spring" of 2014. Now he is trying to fulfill it with the help of war", explains Zhdanov.
The military expert notes: the Rivne nuclear power plant does not fit into this plan. It has no strategic significance today, even if it is adopted today or tomorrow. Moreover, there are more important strategic directions around the power plant.
