Major accident at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant would only happen on Putin's conscious order - expert
Invading Russian forces would only create a major accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) deliberately
Volodymyr Omelchenko, director of energy and infrastructure programs of the Razumkov Center, shared the details with Espreso TV.
"As for the security situation, security will be in question as long as Russian troops are there. In my opinion, a major accident similar to Chernobyl or larger is unlikely. It can happen for only one reason - if it is deliberately organized by order of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin", he said.
In his opinion, there will not be a catastrophe of other scales, because the Zaporizhzhia NPP has many degrees of protection.
"There is a multi-echelon power supply system. Even if they disconnect it from the Ukrainian power system, there are diesel power plants, power distribution networks, as well as there is a connection with the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. There are also passive measures to protect the nuclear power plant after Fukushima. If the networks are destroyed, the plant will be stopped in emergency mode. A hydrogen neutralization system has also been created. It was one of the reasons for the explosion in Chernobyl. The station is sufficiently protected from the point of view of security. In my opinion, a very big accident may happen only on the instructions of Putin, and all responsibility will lie on him and on those people who will carry out these instructions", the expert concluded.
