Don't count on Tusk focusing solely on Ukraine's interests – political scientist Mahda
Political scientist Yevhen Mahda, the executive director of the Institute of World Politics, warns that the new Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, will not concentrate solely on addressing Ukraine's issues
Mahda shared his views on the Espreso TV channel.
"I believe that Tusk, who held the prime minister's position for nearly 7 years, isn't just making a return to prominent politics. His comeback is happening under challenging circumstances. So, the idea that 'Tusk will come and bring order' won't hold true in this case. I wouldn't be overly optimistic that Tusk will exclusively address Ukraine's concerns. Despite stating he'd swiftly tackle issues like Ukrainian grain problems and border crossings, it seems otherwise," he remarked.
He suggests that Tusk will primarily focus on addressing Poland's issues.
"His responsibilities include handling the Polish economy, social policy, and development as the prime minister. Working in the face of substantial opposition, given the Law and Justice party's 35% electoral performance after an 8-year rule, won't be a walk in the park. Fulfilling pre-election promises will necessitate solid evidence," he added.
Mahda emphasizes the need for Ukraine to establish a new ideological connection with Poland.
"Recognizing a common adversary is key to achieving success. Only by progressing in this direction can we instigate the necessary changes in our state. We must evolve alongside our partners," he observed.
Despite recent challenges in bilateral relations, Poland remains Ukraine's primary strategic partner, according to the political scientist.
"We must nurture and substantiate this status," he concluded.
