Detonation of Kakhovka dam occurs from within, indicating Russian involvement
According to Natalia Humeniuk, OC South press center head, the objective of this act was to halt the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Humeniuk stated this on Espreso.
“Detonation was carried out by the occupiers, as they had previously hinted at and blackmailed regarding such an action. Given the nature of the destruction, it is evident that explosives were planted internally, and the detonation occurred from within. The occupiers purposefully blew up the Kakhovka HPP with the intention of intimidating and disrupting the counteroffensive of the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
Here's what is known about the Kakhovka HPP
The Russian invaders seized control of the main structure of the North Crimean Canal and the Kakhovka HPP on February 24 of the previous year. Located 5 km from Nova Kakhovka, which is currently under Russian occupation, the Kakhovka HPP plays a crucial role in the water intake for the North Crimean Canal. The canal, unblocked by the occupiers since the invasion began, receives its water supply from the Kakhovka Reservoir. Additionally, the HPP acts as the sixth and final stage in the Dnipro reservoir cascade. Its hydroelectric power ensures the annual regulation of the Dnipro River's flow, providing electricity and water to the southern part of Ukraine.
On October 20, 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had already issued a warning regarding Russia's preparations for a large-scale terrorist attack, specifically targeting the dam of the Kakhovka HPP in the Kherson region. He highlighted the potential consequences of such an act, including the danger posed to hundreds of thousands of residents in southern Ukraine due to potential flooding, the potential destruction of water supply for a significant part of southern Ukraine and Crimea, the risk of leaving the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant without cooling water, and the overall devastating environmental, humanitarian, and man-made impact that would result from such a terrorist attack.
Following these warnings, Kherson city military administration provided an action plan for the residents of Kherson in the event of a reservoir dam being blown up.

On Tuesday, June 6, the Russian occupying forces detonated the Kakhovka HPP. The evacuation of residents from high-risk areas has begun, and the President of Ukraine has called for an emergency meeting of the Security and Defense Council due to the imminent threat of flooding to 80 settlements.

Kherson officials confirmed that the occupiers blew up the dam of the Kakhovka HPP, and the water is expected to reach a critical level by around 11 a.m.

Natalia Humeniuk stated that the Russians targeted a part of the structure and are resorting to man-made blackmail as a means of exerting pressure on the Defense Forces and Ukraine as a whole. They are desperate in anticipation of the AFU counteroffensive.
