"Negotiation necessity": Diplomat Samarsky explains why USA acknowledges Putin's legitimacy
Ambassador Oleksandr Samarsky suggests the US recognizing Putin as Russia's legitimate president signals readiness for dialogue
He shared his view on Espreso TV.
"The modern world operates based on pragmatism. While US representatives won't attend Putin's inauguration, the White House acknowledges Putin as Russia's legitimate president. This decision stems from practicality - there's a need for negotiations, especially regarding peace talks and potentially dividing Ukraine. Therefore, Biden must engage with a leader on a certain level, hence recognizing Putin as Russia's president," explained Samarsky.
The diplomat added that France is primarily interested in ensuring the Olympic Games proceed without provocations, prompting its representative to attend Putin's inauguration.
"In this context, France shares a similar stance. Additionally, France aims to maintain calm during the Olympic Games, including within its borders. Hence, a French representative will be present at Putin's inauguration," he concluded.
- On April 17, PACE passed a resolution urging against recognizing Putin as Russia's legitimate president. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry urged against such recognition.
- On May 6, the US State Department spokesperson confirmed the US would not send a representative to Putin's pseudo-inauguration on May 7.
