Hodges says idea of freezing Russian-Ukrainian war is ridiculous
Former U.S. Army Commander in Europe Lieutenant General Ben Hodges believes that freezing the Russian-Ukrainian war is a ridiculous idea
Hodges said this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
Answering a question about the mood of Americans and Western societies regarding the so-called freezing of the war between Russia and Ukraine, the American general said that those who talk about it have never looked at a map.
"I mean, they don't understand the significance of Crimea, the Black Sea, and they've never read a single history book, because Russia will never honor any signed agreement. Therefore, the idea that you can freeze this conflict and that it will lead to a good peaceful outcome that is sustainable is ridiculous. Those who understand geography and history know that this is not going to happen," he said.
Hodges hopes that talks about this will stop, because they make no sense, and the only result of the freeze will be to postpone Russia's next step for a while. In addition, in his opinion, only Ukrainians should decide their future, everything depends on Ukraine.
"And I hope that the West will continue to support Ukraine in such a way that it does not feel pressure to do so. I talked to friends from Romania, the Baltic States and Finland. No one wants the conflict to be frozen," he added.
- On March 15, in the Bundestag, the head of the Social Democrats' faction, Mützenich, spoke in favor of freezing the war in Ukraine. German federal government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit responded to the statement by emphasizing that the government would never support this idea.
