What to expect from new US House of Representatives Speaker
We should expect more rigorous inspections, meticulous audits, direct interventions, and external oversight
The new Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, is a 51-year-old Republican from Louisiana. He is known for his support of former President Trump and his strong stance on helping Israel while opposing increased aid to Ukraine
While there are concerns, it's unlikely that Johnson will successfully terminate or reduce military and technical support for Ukraine. However, he may have some influence over financial aid, which could be restricted in various ways, whether temporarily or permanently, it’s hard to say exactly.
What does this mean for us? Expect more rigorous inspections, meticulous audits, direct interventions, and external oversight.
“This increased scrutiny should be seen as positive, as it reflects America's desire to ensure that its aid is used effectively and responsibly, given concerns about corruption at various levels, from military commissions to large-scale state projects.”
The responsibility for financial assistance may also shift more towards the European Union.
However, it's worth noting that conservative Republicans in the United States have traditionally supported the domestic military-industrial complex, which not only bolsters national security but also generates jobs for Republican supporters. This could lead to an increase in aid to Ukraine in terms of weaponry and equipment, as it would deplete outdated U.S. stockpiles, driving the need to replace them with modern weapons instead of those manufactured in the 1980s and 1990s, or even earlier (their specialists are often impressed by the continued effectiveness of older weaponry and the fact that it can still function well after decades).
