US trying to convince other countries to support Ukraine's accession to NATO
U.S. President Joe Biden and his team discuss with other NATO member states when Ukraine can join the Alliance
CNN reported the information.
The issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO will be one of the main issues for discussion at the July summit in Vilnius.
Some countries are in favor of a more specific way for Ukraine to join NATO after the war. These are mainly Eastern European states located near Ukraine and Russia.
"Other European officials, particularly those in western and southern Europe, have argued an expedited entrance of Ukraine into NATO could be too provocative and that it could amount to an extremely risky gamble for the alliance even if there is an end to the fighting, particularly if Russia still stakes claim over Ukrainian territory," the outlet notes.
"Biden and members of his administration have remained committed to the alliance’s current posture, which states Ukraine will eventually join NATO but without any certainty of when," the journalists added.
Ukraine's accession to NATO
In July, the NATO summit will be held in Vilnius. At the summit, Ukraine expects concrete decisions on its path to joining the Alliance. According to Ukraine's Ambassador to NATO, Natalia Galibarenko, Ukraine is actively preparing two cooperation packages, namely political and practical, which will be presented for discussion during the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius. Additionally, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba outlined three key points that define Ukraine's vision for a successful outcome at the NATO summit in Vilnius. "Strengthen Ukraine-NATO institutional ties and assistance. Take a step toward UA membership. Provide security guarantees on Ukraine’s path to NATO."
On June 10, Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Volodymyr Havrylov expressed his belief that the July NATO summit in Vilnius will set the algorithm for Ukraine's accession to the Alliance.
On June 13, the NATO Secretary General said that Ukraine would definitely become a member of the Alliance, but that it was impossible to give exact dates of accession while the country was at war.
On June 15, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for Ukraine's membership in NATO with 425 votes in favor.
