White House labels Russia's threats to target Polish air defense base as reckless, yet takes them seriously
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has warned Poland of a "potential strike" in response to the opening of a U.S. base. In response, White House communications adviser John Kirby stated that the U.S. takes these "reckless" statements seriously
This was reported by the Russian propaganda outlet RIA Novosti.
"The missile defense base in Poland has long been included on the list of priority targets for potential strikes, which, if necessary, can be targeted with a wide range of the latest weapons," Zakharova said in a statement.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, the United States supposedly continues to provoke Russia and contribute to "increasing tensions and strategic risks."
White House Communications Advisor John Kirby commented on the Russian statements at a briefing on November 25.
"We’ve seen those comments, and, obviously, you know, you have to take those kinds of threats seriously, and we do. As reckless and irresponsible as they are, we obviously take it seriously," he said.
According to Kirby, U.S. President Joe Biden is doing everything possible to ensure the safety of U.S. troops on the European continent, as Washington takes its Article 5 commitments to NATO allies seriously.
- On November 13, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced the opening of a new air defense base.
