European Parliament adopts resolution calling to invite Ukraine to NATO
On Thursday, June 15, the European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling on NATO to invite Ukraine in the Alliance with 425 votes in favor, 38 against and 42 abstentions
The European Parliament announced the information on its website.
"MEPs call on NATO allies to honour their commitment to Ukraine and pave the way for Kyiv to be invited to join the defence alliance," the statement reads.
The resolution says that MEPs expect the accession process to begin after the end of the war and "be finalised as soon as possible."
The statement also emphasizes that until membership is achieved, the EU, together with NATO allies and like-minded partners, should "work closely with Ukraine to develop a temporary framework for security guarantees." MEPs insist that they should be introduced immediately after the end of the war.
"Parliament emphasises that Ukraine’s integration in both NATO and the EU would enhance regional and global security and strengthen the bonds between Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic community," the statement reads.
Chairman of Ukraine’s parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk thanked the European Parliament for the resolution and support for Ukraine's integration into the Euro-Atlantic community.
"I am grateful to the European Parliament President and MEPs for supporting Ukraine's accession to NATO! Thank you for adopting a resolution supporting Ukraine's integration into the Euro-Atlantic community. The European Parliament expects that the upcoming summits in Vilnius and Washington will pave the way for an invitation to Ukraine to join the Alliance and a timeframe for security guarantees will be developed until Ukraine achieves NATO membership," he writes.
Ukraine's accession to NATO
In July, the NATO summit will be held in Vilnius. At the summit, Ukraine expects concrete decisions on its path to joining the Alliance. According to Ukraine's Ambassador to NATO, Natalia Galibarenko, Ukraine is actively preparing two cooperation packages, namely political and practical, which will be presented for discussion during the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius. Additionally, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba outlined three key points that define Ukraine's vision for a successful outcome at the NATO summit in Vilnius. "Strengthen Ukraine-NATO institutional ties and assistance. Take a step toward UA membership. Provide security guarantees on Ukraine’s path to NATO."
On June 10, Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Volodymyr Havrylov expressed his belief that the July NATO summit in Vilnius will set the algorithm for Ukraine's accession to the Alliance.
On June 13, the NATO Secretary General said that Ukraine would definitely become a member of the Alliance, but that it was impossible to give exact dates of accession while the country was at war.
