Russian troops execute five Ukrainian POWs in Pokrovsk area, Ukraine launches investigation
Russian forces executed five Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Pokrovsk direction, Donetsk region
According to Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office, in November 2024, Russian forces stormed Ukrainian defense positions near the village of Petrivka, Pokrovsk district. Following the attack, five soldiers from Ukraine's Armed Forces were forced to retreat and take shelter in a private house.
Law enforcement reports indicate that after surrounding the house, Russian soldiers captured the unarmed defenders. They were ordered to leave the shelter and lie on the ground before being executed with automatic weapons.
“An investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances of the crime and identify those responsible. Executing prisoners of war is a blatant violation of the Geneva Conventions and constitutes a severe international crime,” the Prosecutor General’s Office stated.
- Earlier, on November 20, reports surfaced suggesting Russian troops likely executed Ukrainian POWs who had been encircled near Kursk.
