US strategic line is to prevent Putin from conquering Ukraine, but to avoid Russia's defeat - diplomat

Diplomat, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States (2015-2019) Valeriy Chaly believes that a controlled war can lead to very negative consequences

He expressed this opinion in the Verdict with Serhii Rudenko program on Espreso TV channel.

"The United States has long ago decided, and its line has not changed strategically. First, to prevent Putin and Russia from conquering Ukraine. We are not talking about the territorial framework, but there is an agreement on the complete de-occupation of Ukraine, including Crimea. Second, to prevent an uncontrolled course of events in Russia.  The United States fears that uncontrolled armed groups may gain access to nuclear weapons. The United States does not see a better situation in the near future if events in Russia develop uncontrollably. Therefore, the United States does not just not want Russia to fail, it is using its strategy to prevent this failure. And this is a big problem," Chaly emphasized.

According to the diplomat, it is an impossible task to simultaneously achieve the de-occupation of Ukraine's territories and avoid Russia's defeat.

"It's a big mistake that the US decided to balance this moment with supplies and weapons. It was last year's mistake, when we did not receive the necessary amount of available weapons. America can supply Ukraine with not 31 Abrams tanks. America can easily supply 300 tanks, but they will not be delivered for various reasons. The US is helping us to de-occupy the territories, but they don't want to give us everything at once. The US wants to influence events. Such a controlled war can lead to very negative consequences. But we understand that without their support it would be much more difficult for us," emphasized Chaly.

  • During a visit to Ukraine, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin assured the country's leadership of continued US support.
  • President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that joint calls by the United States and China could force Russia to stop its offensive against Ukraine and withdraw its troops.
