Ukraine investigates possible involvement of Belarus in children deportation
Ukraine is investigating the possible role of Belarus in the forced deportation of children from the temporarily occupied territories. Criminal proceedings have been opened
This was reported to Reuters by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
This statement was a response to reports from the Belarusian opposition in exile that 2,150 Ukrainian children, including orphans aged 6 to 15, had been taken to so-called health camps and sanatoriums in Belarus.
It is known that the children were taken to at least three locations in Belarus. It is also alleged that self-proclaimed President Alexander Lukashenko personally ordered the deportation of groups of Ukrainians.
Criminal proceedings have been opened over the deportation of children from the occupied territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Kharkiv regions, including to Belarus.
"The fact and circumstances of taking Ukrainian children from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to the so-called 'recreational camps' in Belarus are currently under investigation in the mentioned criminal proceedings," it said.
The actions of Belarus can also be qualified as a crime against humanity.
- On 17 March, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. He is suspected of forcibly deporting Ukrainian children.
