Taiwan's fate depends on Ukraine, only Russia's defeat will deter China – Taipei's ambassador to US

Ukraine's victory over Russia is necessary to deter China; if the West leaves Kyiv, Taiwan will realize that it is also left alone with Beijing

The Washington Post wrote about the situation.

Josh Rogin's column says that while some American politicians, mostly Republicans, say that military aid to Ukraine should be cut, but at the same time advocate maximum support for Taiwan, Taipei is confident that Ukraine must be protected first. They say that the island's security depends on Washington's firm support for Kyiv.

The WP’s columnist quotes Taiwan's Ambassador to the United States, Bi-khim Hsiao, who believes that the fate of the island is completely dependent on the fate of Ukraine - its survival is Taiwan's survival, its victory is Taiwan's victory.

He also rejected the idea that it is not Ukraine's victory over Russia that is needed to deter China, but the balance of power in Asia. Bi-khim Hsiao emphasized that if the West abandons Ukraine, Taiwan will realize that it is also left alone with China.

"Support for Ukraine is relevant to us because, first of all, ultimately it helps to deter. It imposes costs on the aggressor," Hsiao said. "International support for Ukraine is also essential in affirming the credibility and reliability of the United States and your allies.”

Also, the US military in Asia is not calling for a reduction in military aid to Ukraine.

The author notes that, in general, the idea of abandoning Ukraine to focus on Taiwan does not make sense, because if Ukraine does not succeed, the war in Europe is likely to escalate, requiring more, not less, US involvement.

Beijing's large-scale assistance to Putin's war effort shows that Xi believes that Ukraine’s victory is bad for China. Russia and China are colluding to support autocratic aggression. The United States, Europe, Ukraine, and Taiwan must stand together against them, Josh Rogin concludes.

  • Foreign ministers of Germany and France demand that China make a decision on the war in Ukraine and influence Russia.
