Russian nuclear submarine surfaces in Mediterranean Sea - Bild
Russia may be trying to covertly deploy a nuclear submarine in the Mediterranean Sea, possibly the APC K-266 Orel, which is one of the Oscar II submarines still in service with the Northern Fleet
This is reported by Bild.
It is said that a Russian nuclear submarine is believed to be in the Mediterranean Sea near Italy. It is not known how long it floated near mainland Europe.
One of the reasons for the submarine being near the coast of Italy is that it can replace the Russian Slava-class guided-missile destroyer, the Marshal Ustinov, which was in the Mediterranean until August 24.
The Marshall Ustinov has been sailing between Great Britain and Ireland for several days, accompanied by the destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov - possibly to divert attention from a Russian nuclear submarine near Italy.
NATO analysts are tracking the ship to determine its type and purpose. It is likely that this is a nuclear submarine, that is, it runs on atomic energy. This term does not mean that it carries nuclear weapons.
