SVT reported the information.

According to the Coast Guard, the exact timing of the cable damage remains unknown, but the incident was reported on Thursday.

"A preliminary sabotage investigation was launched to give the police access to tools needed to determine what happened," said Mathias Rutegård from the national police media center.

The cable between Germany and Finland is owned by Cinia. The company stated that the damage was minor and did not affect the communication line. However, this is the third such incident recently the cable was completely cut in November and December.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson commented on the incident on X, saying he had been aware of it "for some time" and that the government receives regular updates from relevant agencies.

"We take all information about possible infrastructure damage in the Baltic Sea very seriously. As I have said before, such incidents must be viewed in the context of the serious security situation," he emphasized.

  • On November 18, 2024, it was reported that the 1,173 km C-Lion1 underwater cable between Finland and Germany had been severed in the Baltic Sea. Later, another damaged underwater telecommunications cable was discovered between Lithuania and Sweden.
  • On December 3, 2024, an internet cable between Finland and Sweden was severed and sustained damage.
  • On January 26, an undersea fiber-optic cable between Latvia and Sweden was damaged, likely due to external impact.
