US refuse to co-sponsor UN resolution in support of Ukraine
For the first time, the United States has refused to co-sponsor a draft UN resolution on the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which reaffirms support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and condemns Russian aggression
Reuters reports this, citing three diplomatic sources.
At the UN, countries can decide to co-sponsor a resolution right up to the vote. The 193-member General Assembly is expected to vote Monday, diplomats said. General Assembly resolutions are not binding but carry political weight because they reflect a global view of the war.
"In previous years, the United States has consistently co-sponsored such resolutions in support of a just peace in Ukraine," one of the sources, who like the others requested anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, said on Thursday.
A second diplomatic source who also requested anonymity said: "For now, the situation is the US won't sign it." Efforts are ongoing to seek support from other countries instead, including the Global South, the source added.
The draft UN resolution, seen by Reuters, "calls for a de-escalation, an early cessation of hostilities and a peaceful resolution of the war against Ukraine ... in line with the U.N. Charter and international law".
It also "recalls the need for full implementation of its relevant resolutions adopted in response to the aggression against Ukraine, in particular its demand that the Russian Federation immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders".
Rift between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump
The day before, US President Donald Trump said that negotiations with Russia were going well, and Moscow was allegedly interested in ending the fighting. He accused Ukraine of keeping the war going.
Trump emphasized that the situation in Ukraine was critical, and Zelenskyy's approval rating had allegedly dropped to 4%.
After that, Trump called Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections” and said that Zelenskyy had convinced the United States to “spend $350 billion on the war.”
