What kind of drones does Ukraine launch at Russia?
Russian reports of Ukraine launching 150 drones likely include a mix of target, medium-range, and long-range drones, reflecting a complex UAV strategy
Russian resources write that Ukraine is launching over 150 drones.
I’d like to highlight an important nuance here. Ukrainian attacks differ significantly from Russian ones. Russia primarily relies on a single type of attack UAV—the Shahed.
And we have a whole zoo of different drones, with different functionality and range.
It’s possible that even if we did launch 150 drones, many of them were likely distraction drones intended to divert air defenses. Additionally, there are medium-range strike drones with a range of 200-300 km, which can serve as both decoys, but also have some targets of their own. A smaller number of long-range drones with ranges of 1,000 km or more.
Earlier, Ukraine's Minister of Strategic Industries boasted that we can produce 10,000 medium-range strike drones and more than 1,000 drones with a range of 1,000+ kilometers per year.
That's why the figure may look impressive, but there's a nuance.
