U.S. does not allow Ukraine to use its weapons to strike Moscow - Biden
U.S. President Joe Biden says Ukraine is prohibited from using his country's weapons to strike at Moscow or the Kremlin
He said this in an interview with ABC News.
The journalist asked the White House chief if Kyiv had used American weapons after receiving permission from the United States to launch strikes to defend the Kharkiv region. Biden did not provide a specific answer to this question, but made it clear that Ukraine was not authorized to use them against the Russian capital or the Kremlin.
"They're authorized to be used in proximity to the border when they're being used on the other side of the border to attack specific targets in Ukraine," Biden told Muir of U.S. weapons. "We're not authorizing strikes 200 miles into Russia, and we're not authorizing strikes on Moscow, on the Kremlin,” he emphasized.
The American president also commented on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's words that supplying weapons to Ukraine for strikes against Russia is “direct participation in this war.”
"I've known him for over 40 years. He's concerned me for 40 years. He's not a decent man," Biden said. "He's a dictator, and he's struggling to make sure he holds his country together while still keeping this assault going. We're not talking about giving them weapons to strike Moscow, to strike the Kremlin, to strike against -- just across the border, where they're receiving significant fire from conventional weapons used by the Russians to go into Ukraine to kill Ukrainians,” said the U.S. President.
- On May 31, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken confirmed that President Joe Biden had secretly authorized Ukraine to strike targets in Russia with U.S. weapons. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the message came from the United States and called the ally's action a “step forward.” At the same time, a representative of the U.S. National Security Council commented on the boundaries of the Russian Federation covered by the U.S. authorization.
- On June 5, a U.S. senator and a Western official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Ukraine has already used U.S. weapons to strike targets in Russia.
