Russia declines invitation to Ukraine peace summit — Russian FM
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia has no intention of participating in the Ukraine Peace Summit
He said this in an interview with TASS.
"I have explained many times that we have no intention of participating in the Peace Summit, even if we are invited," Lavrov said.
According to him, Ukraine has not abandoned the goal of restoring its territorial integrity within the 1991 borders and the withdrawal of Russian troops.
"In October, meetings were held as part of preparations for the second summit. They want to invite Russia to it, as we understand, in order to present some ultimatum to us," the minister believes.
Second Global Peace Summit
Ukraine aimed to hold the second Global Peace Summit in November 2024, before the U.S. presidential elections. However, it later became known that the summit would not take place in November, but "everything for its preparation should already be ready."
At the end of July, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that a peace plan would be ready by the end of November 2024, preceded by a series of negotiations with various countries regarding Ukraine's territorial integrity.
In October, the Ukrainian president suggested that if the countries of the Global South invited Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the second Peace Summit, he would not want to participate.
Zelenskyy also believes that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could help organize the second Peace Summit in India.
On October 30, President Zelenskyy's spokesperson, Serhiy Nykyforov, announced that Ukraine was preparing a three-point plan to present at the second Peace Summit.
On October 31, the President's Office reported that Ukraine would begin formulating proposals for the second Peace Summit after a thematic conference in Canada on the fourth point of the Peace Formula, the Release of prisoners and deported persons.
On November 8, the spokesperson of Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heorhiy Tykhyi, stated that the precondition for holding the second Peace Summit is the creation of a common basis for a peace agreement that reflects the position of the global community.
On December 3, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine was ready to invite Russia to the second Peace Summit. However, Russian leader Vladimir Putin is not interested in peace.
On December 27, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Ukraine had prepared everything necessary for the second Peace Summit, but work on the meeting was still ongoing.
