Putin's nuclear threats. Will Biden back down?
Putin is changing the basis of state policy on nuclear deterrence and this is the new reality of the Russian-Ukrainian war
Let me say right away that treating this carelessly is infantilism. However, we should not sound the alarm and shout "lookout" either.
It is one thing to hear a statement from a war criminal with its international implications, and another to directly change the document itself - in this case, the Russian military doctrine and the Foundations of State Policy of the Russian Federation in the Area of Nuclear Deterrence.
Some of us, in a state of Buddhist calm, might say that Putin did this to intimidate the West again, but the West is already weary of the Kremlin's nuclear threats, and most of the "red lines" have long been crossed. Therefore, this bravado will likely go unnoticed.
But no. The West is indeed tired of threats, and Putin's "red lines" have been crossed. However, it’s one thing to hear Medvedev's outrageous statements about ‘no one and no name,’ and quite another to change a nuclear document with an eye toward international reaction and an audience that may perceive it as an extraordinary event.
Believe me, the Western media will now launch an aggressive campaign of fear-mongering in public opinion. The number of those who claim we are on the verge of nuclear war will grow exponentially, and even more will come to believe it. This will fuel the idea of immediately putting Ukraine at the negotiating table with Russia.
On the other hand, if you examine the statement of the illegal ruler of the Russian Federation closely, the clarification of the nuclear deterrence policy is aimed at countering the West's permission for "long-range’"actions in Russia.
Now it’s up to Washington. Biden will back down.
