As of October 2024, 128,000 square kilometers of land and 14,000 square kilometers of water in Ukraine remain contaminated with explosive remnants due to the Russian invasion
The press service of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reports.
It is noted that Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine has a significant impact on the safety of civilians, agriculture, industry and social and economic growth in the affected regions.
According to Colonel Ruslan Berehulia, Head of the Main Department of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety, Head of the Secretariat of the National Mine Action Authority, these risks negatively affect the lives of more than 6 million Ukrainians.
In particular, at the forum “Financial Principles in Humanitarian Demining and Principles of Compensation in the Agricultural Sector” in Kyiv during the Security 2.0 exhibition, he spoke about the current situation in Ukraine and outlined the next steps to improve the effectiveness of humanitarian demining activities.
“Thanks to our joint efforts, we will clear our land of explosive ordnance meter by meter and create powerful tools to realize the humanitarian goals of mine action,” Berehulia thanked Ukraine's international partners for their support and assistance.
The speaker emphasized that such cooperation in the regions affected by the aggressor's actions will create a safe environment, return the temporarily displaced persons, and restore economic development.
- Recently, the UN reported that it could take a hundred years to completely demine the territory of Ukraine using traditional methods, and that technology could help speed up the process.
