Sweden boosts Ukraine's aviation: Defense Express on donation of ASC 890 radar aircraft
Defense Express military expert Ivan Kyrychevskyi noted that Sweden sends Ukraine two radar surveillance aircraft to enable F-16s to better see enemy warplanes
He said this on the Espreso TV channel.
"The Swedes are donating radar surveillance aircraft to Ukraine so that our F-16s can better see the aircraft with guided bombs in the sky that are dropped on Kharkiv or other frontline positions. The Swedes are giving us a radar surveillance aircraft for tactical warfare. We will get a better aircraft than the Russian A-50. This aircraft will not have to fly close to the strike zone. The Russians have much less chance of hitting this aircraft in our skies than we had of targeting the A-50," Kyrychevskyi said.
According to the military expert, Ukraine's first attempts to make a radar surveillance aircraft were back in 1992.
"We had negotiations with the Swedes to get a similar system back in 2008 and 2012. There were even some projects for radar surveillance aircraft in 2021 based on the An-178, but everything came to a halt due to lack of money. Because one used aircraft like the one the Swedes are giving us costs more than €200 million. The fact that Sweden is providing us with such an aircraft is a huge boost to the capabilities of our aviation and a reason to celebrate with the across the country," Kyrychevskyi said.
