Every Ukrainian should have plan B: former energy minister on situation with electricity
Oleksiy Orzhel, Minister of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine (2019-2020), suggested that the situation with electricity in winter may be challenging in a different way
He said this on the Espreso TV channel.
"The situation in winter can be different. In large cities where there are centralized systems, if they are limited or disconnected from the power supply, it means no water supply, no heating and evacuation. Such a situation could potentially happen, but the power sector will do its best. If the Russians strike at power transmission and distribution facilities, it means that the system may operate in several island modes. And then it may happen that imports coming from Europe will not be able to reach the left bank of Ukraine. That is, there will be a much bigger deficit there than closer to the borders with Europe," Orzhel explained.
The former Minister of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine also stressed that every Ukrainian should have a plan B.
"There are many options and negative scenarios. Today, the protection of the energy sector is critical. Every Ukrainian should have a plan B in case of such a situation. If there is an opportunity to live in a private house with firewood, stoves, a boiler and a generator, it is important to do so," added Orzhel.
Emergency power shutdowns are currently implemented across a dozen of Ukraine's region after Russia attacked the country’s energy system with drones and missiles
