Oleksiy Yizhak, an analyst at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, noted that the intensity of hostilities will increase before the US presidential election, as Ukraine and Russia will try to reach better negotiating positions

He expressed this opinion on Espreso TV.

‘Whether there will be a slowdown in hostilities will depend on us. In an interview with CNN, Ukraine's army chief Syrsky said that there has been no advance of Russian troops for several days, they have been stopped. In my opinion, the general trend is to increase the intensity. But the enemy in the east can indeed be stopped. There is a possibility that, with luck and proper planning, a situation may arise where the entire Russian offensive of recent months is devalued by a few powerful Ukrainian strikes. That is, it could be when the leaves fall and the equipment in the Donetsk region cannot move and continue to advance, providing logistics. But this does not mean a decrease in intensity,’ the analyst said.

According to him, the intensity will increase before the US presidential election, as both sides will try to reach better negotiating positions.

‘The Russians want to negotiate. I don't believe that any peace is possible this year, any peaceful solution is impossible. But there is a standard American position that the only realistic option is to freeze this war for a while, take a breather and see what happens next, and when something happens to Putin, enter into peace talks. I do not rule out that some direct consultations may begin this year, but there will be no peace talks. There may be negotiations on the suspension of hostilities,’ summed up Oleksiy Yizhak.

  • Russia will consider negotiations with Ukraine only when it believes that Kyiv can ‘threaten Moscow and St. Petersburg’.
  • Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has said that Russia has never given up on peace talks with Ukraine. However, according to him, first it is necessary to ‘deal with the bandits’ who have entered the territory of Kursk region.
