Number of killed and wounded soldiers in Russia and Ukraine approaches one million, WSJ says
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the number of killed and wounded Ukrainian and Russian soldiers has reached about a million
The Wall Street Journal reported the information, citing its own sources.
According to the outlet, the Ukrainian and Russian sides do not provide official data on the number of casualties in the war.
Instead, according to the outlet’s estimate, which was made earlier this year, the number of dead Ukrainian soldiers is 80,000, and the number of wounded is 400,000.
At the same time, Western intelligence estimates of Russian losses vary: according to some reports, the number of dead reaches almost 200,000 and the number of wounded is about 400,000.
The WSJ reported that the losses create a problem for Russia, which is employing waves of poorly trained soldiers in an attempt to advance in eastern Ukraine while also trying to counter Ukraine's recent invasion of the Kursk region.
While Russia has been “increasing its population” by seizing territory, the war has had a devastating effect on its internal demographics and labor market, with more than 600,000 Russians fleeing the country since the start of the full-scale invasion.
The last census of Ukraine in 2001 recorded 48 million inhabitants. According to Ukrainian demographers and government officials, this number fell to 40 million in early 2022.
According to the UN, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 6 million people have fled Ukraine, and Russia has seized new territories, bringing the total population in government-controlled territory to 25-27 million.
