“It is Ukraine that will be asked to join NATO, and not the other way around” – John Spencer
On the air of the Spotlight Ukraine program, retired US Army Major John Spencer commented on bringing Putin to justice, effectiveness of Russia sanctions, and Ukraine’s NATO aspirations
This is reported on Spotlight Ukraine | Espreso TV Channel.
The Chair of Urban Warfare Studies at Modern War Institute at West Point believes that it will be difficult to bring Putin to justice and a lot still needs to be done to achieve this.
“That's going to be tough. I think the first start would be to kick him out of any multi-international organizations until he changes his behavior. I think the world can also impose more sanctions. A lot can be done by informing the Russian people what the Russians are doing in Ukraine. There are many actions, but the first one is to 100% help Ukraine remove the Russian military from its sovereign land,” John Spencer said.
The military specialist is convinced that Western sanctions against Russia are effective and their results can already be seen.
“Some of them are short-term sanctions and some of them are more long-term, like sanctions on technologies. And we see that this has resulted in limited military capabilities to refurbish. The damage that Putin is doing to the Russian state will take generations to repair. Of course, there is lots more that can be done, but sanctions are having an impact for sure,” he said.
Answering a question about whether Ukraine will become a member of NATO, John Spencer said: “I absolutely believe that it will be Ukraine that will be asked to join NATO, and not the other way around. Because Ukraine is one of the strongest countries in Europe by every definition.”
