Hungarian FM Szijjártó accuses EU of globalizing war in Ukraine. Ukraine responds
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has accused the EU of globalizing the war in Ukraine, which has allegedly harmed relations between the West and the East
He made the statement on Facebook.
"The European Union was supposed to isolate the war but instead globalized its negative consequences. Such wrong decisions have severely damaged East-West cooperation. Moreover, the sanctions have been a complete failure, which has significantly weakened the EU's competitiveness," Szijjártó said.
Ukraine's response
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko believes that Brussels should demand an explanation from Hungary for the minister's words.
"It turns out that the whole world is suffering from the consequences of the war not because Russia attacked Ukraine, but because Europe has globalized the conflict. This is the opinion of Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who recently visited Hong Kong. In our opinion, Brussels should request an explanation from Budapest as to why the Hungarian minister is spreading disinformation against the European Union in the interests of Russia," he wrote.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman noted that Hungary is trying to undermine European positions in Asia with such statements.
Hungary's stance in Russia's war against Ukraine
Representatives of the Hungarian authorities regularly make statements that humiliate Ukrainians and their fight against the Russian occupying forces. For example, in April, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called Ukraine a "financially non-existent state." He said that Ukraine pays pensions and salaries only thanks to funds provided by the EU, including Hungary.
In May, Orban expressed his belief that no one could defeat Russia, and in early June he called on Ukraine to hold peace talks, threatening it with huge losses in the event of a counteroffensive.
In turn, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó called on US and Russian Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin to sit down at the negotiating table to end the war in Ukraine.
And in late August, Hungarian President Katalin Novak called on Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sit down with Russia to bring peace closer.
