Hungarian President calls on Zelenskyy to start peace talks with Russia
Hungarian President Katalin Novak said that she urged Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sit down at the negotiating table with Russia to bring peace closer
She said this in an interview with the Hungarian newspaper Index.
As a reminder, the politician visited Ukrainian Zakarpattia region on August 22.
"This war has not only destroyed the lives of Ukrainians, but also, as Pope Francis said, 'brought the conflict into our homes,'" she said.
Novak stressed that Hungary condemns Russia's aggression and understands Zelenskyy's desire to protect Ukrainians. At the same time, the Hungarian president believes that negotiations are the best way to end the war.
"This war has been going on for a year and a half, and I don't see any military solution that would lead to sustainable peace in the long term. That is why we need to sit down at the negotiating table! I have expressed this firm opinion to Zelenskyy both publicly and privately," she said.
At the same time, Novak said that Hungary is ready to join President Zelenskyy's Peace Formula.
Hungary's position in Russia's war against Ukraine
Representatives of the Hungarian authorities regularly make statements that humiliate Ukrainians and their fight against Russia. In April, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called Ukraine a "financially non-existent state". He said that Ukraine pays pensions and salaries only thanks to funds provided by the EU, including Hungary.
In May, Orban expressed his belief that no one could defeat Russia, and in early June he called on Ukraine to hold peace talks, threatening it with huge losses in case of a counteroffensive.
In turn, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó called on US and Russian Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin to sit down to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
