For every Ukrainian hacker, there are three Russian: Ukrainian officer on mobile operator cyberattack
Ivan Stupak, a military expert and member of the Security Service of Ukraine in 2004-2015, commented on the cyberattack on Ukraine's top mobile operator Kyivstar. The average ratio of Russian hackers to Ukrainian hackers in this confrontation is 3 to 1
He said this on the Espreso TV channel.
"The Security Service of Ukraine has opened 8 criminal proceedings regarding the attack on Kyivstar. This is not the first time Russia has tried to attack. However, earlier it was banks, government agencies and websites. The Russians have good cyber specialists who are employed by intelligence services, military intelligence and the FSB. The average ratio of Russian hackers to Ukrainian hackers in this confrontation is 1 to 3. Unfortunately, it is not in our favour," he said.
"At the beginning of the war, foreign experts helped Ukraine, we were ahead. But now the Russians have engaged more different organisations, communities and individual hackers, Stupak said. He explained how the Russians engage people in cooperation.
"Some people are pressured and blackmailed by being prosecuted for old cases. A large number of hackers in Russia are wanted by the FBI, EU countries or the world. So they are told: if you work for us, do what we say, then you will not be extradited. This is how they work," the military expert explained.
- On the morning of December 12, Kyivstar users lost mobile communications: the company said that the failure was caused by a powerful hacker attack. The Security Service of Ukraine opened criminal proceedings under eight articles, including high treason and sabotage.
- Russian hackers from the Solntsepek group claim responsibility for the cyberattack on Kyivstar. The Security Service of Ukraine predicts that mobile communications and the Internet will be launched on December 13.
