Decision to transfer fighters to Ukraine should be made with the participation of all NATO countries - the Prime Minister of Poland
Logistics for the transfer of aircraft to Ukraine to combat Russian aggression will be one of the main issues during the visit of US Vice President Kamala Harris to Poland
This was reported by the Associated Press, informs Espresso.TV.
On Tuesday, March 8, the Polish government announced a plan to transfer its Soviet-made fighters to a US military base in Germany, hoping that the planes would then be handed over to Ukrainian pilots. In turn, the United States will supply American aircraft to Poland.
However, this report was not previously discussed with the Biden administration, and the Pentagon quickly dismissed the idea as untenable.
Today, March 9, the Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki reiterated that support for Ukraine is defensive, and any decision on whether to provide aircraft to Ukraine should be made by the United States and NATO:
"Poland is not a party to this war. Such a serious decision as the transfer of aircraft must be taken unanimously and unequivocally by the entire North Atlantic Alliance".
The problem with the plane has become a rare moment of disharmony among NATO countries in their quest to help Ukraine without getting involved in a wider war with Russia.
And now Harris's task is to find a solution to this situation. According to the newspaper, she will continue talks with the Poles on providing Ukrainian fighters. This issue remains a priority for the Biden administration.
On Thursday, March 10, Harris is scheduled to meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, as well as with Ukrainians who have fled to Poland. She will also meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during her stay in Warsaw. Trudeau was in Europe this week to meet with Ukraine's allies. On Friday, Harris will travel to Bucharest to meet with Romanian President Klaus Johannes.
The vice president is also expected to use the meetings in Poland and Romania to emphasize US commitment to NATO and the need to continue humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine. She will also emphasize the need for the Allies to continue their close coordination.
