"Any world conflict where the West is an opponent is considered as an opportunity by Iran, but it also has contradictions with Russia" - political scientist Kulyk

Vitalii Kulyk, director of the NGO called Center for Research of Civil Society Issues, says that by arming Russia Iran is demonstrating its own forces and means of destruction, but at the same time Tehran fears the strengthening of Russia`s positions in Central Asia.

He said this on Espreso TV.

The political scientist commented on Iran's supply of drones to Russia: "This is an exchange of technology and the attraction of Russian money for modernization, as well as testing its weapons in combat conditions. Now Iran illustrates the presence of forces and means of influence in case of a conflict against itself, thus it shows its weapons through Russia."

Vitalii Kulyk noted that the main interaction of Iran is geopolitical one, that is, the formation of a new world order, where it should play one of the key roles in the region. It needs to displace other regional players, act as a deterrent to Turkey, as well as play a system-building role in the Persian Gulf, reducing the influence of Turkey, the US, and the UK.

"Accordingly, Iran is interested in cooperation with Russia, which would weaken the EU and the US. In addition, any conflict in which the West is an opponent is viewed by Iran as the potential opportunities to play some game in its interests. After all, it is not yet a military-political alliance between Iran and Russia, because Iran has a conflict with Russia in the Caucasus and the Caspian, as well as in Central Asia. Tehran fears the strengthening of Russia in Central Asia and is interested in having some degree of security vacuum there. Moreover, Iran cherishes the idea of dividing the spheres of influence of the economic zones in the Caspian, where there is oil, so the contradictions are weighty and serious. However, this leaves more room for maneuver, as well as more points of contact with the Russian Federation due to the war in Ukraine. Tehran is ready to neglect its relations with Ukraine in order to expand military cooperation with Russia," Kulyk explained.
