Russian soldiers execute 4 Ukrainian POWs from 110th Brigade in Donetsk region
On December 22, 2024, Russian soldiers executed 4 Ukrainian servicemen who had surrendered as prisoners of war. Ukraine’s Office of the Prosecutor General has initiated a pre-trial investigation. Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets stated that he will appeal to the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
The Office of the Prosecutor General reported the information.
According to the report, information about the incident in the Vremivka direction in the Volnovakha district appeared on Telegram on December 22, 2024.
Investigators revealed that four Ukrainian servicemen, who were forced to hide in a private house during artillery shelling, were surrounded by Russian forces. After stepping outside, they surrendered.
"Two prisoners were left lying on the ground, while the other two were taken to the road. Later, all four Ukrainian soldiers were cynically executed by the occupiers, in gross violation of the Geneva Conventions," stated the Office of the Prosecutor General.
Under the procedural guidance of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, a pre-trial investigation has been launched into the war crime that caused the deaths (Part 2, Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Statement from the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade
Ivan Sekach, the press officer of the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Marko Bezruchko, confirmed the execution of Ukrainian servicemen by Russian forces, as reported by Suspilne.
According to Sekach, four brigade soldiers were executed in the Vremivka bulge area.
"There were six soldiers at their position. An artillery bombardment began. From their report, we know that two servicemen were killed during the shelling. Four were surrounded," Sekach explained.
The report indicates that information about the execution came from intercepted Russian communications. Additionally, drone footage was obtained that captured the moment the prisoners were shot.
Sekach added that Russian commanders order the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war to avoid slowing the pace of their offensive.
"All are officially listed as missing, as access to the bodies is currently unavailable," he concluded.
Comment by Ombudsman Lubinets
Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said he would report this fact to the UN and the ICRC.
“Russian war criminals who shoot Ukrainian prisoners of war must be brought before an international tribunal and face the most severe punishment provided by law!” emphasized the Ombudsman.
