Fico seeks Putin's favor post-war – political scientist Reiterovych
Political scientist Ihor Reiterovych says that Robert Fico and Viktor Orban are doing everything possible to win Russia’s favor after the Russian-Ukrainian war
He shared this opinion on Espreso TV.
"I wouldn’t be surprised if Robert Fico is rooting for his country. Though it’s worth noting he prioritizes his government first, then the country. For him, these are linked steps, so he’s willing to take actions that raise moral and ethical questions," Reiterovych stated.
The political scientist emphasized that Fico aims to keep access to cheap Russian energy resources, even amid Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine.
"Fico, like Orban, wants to preserve ties with Russia. They’re counting on being remembered favorably in the Kremlin once the war ends. Specifically, as leaders who didn’t abandon Russia despite EU sanctions. They’re hoping for payback — cheap energy, loans, even investments. It’s a cold, calculated strategy. Slovakia has relied on cheap Russian energy for a long time and doesn’t want to let it go, even during a full-scale war," he added.
- In October, the European Energy Commissioner announced the EU’s readiness to terminate the Naftogaz-Gazprom gas transit contract through Ukraine by the end of the year.
- In response, Fico declared Slovakia would negotiate gas supplies from Russia via Ukraine after the current transit deal expires.
- The Slovak Prime Minister also discussed gas supply routes through Ukraine with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
- Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Ukraine would stop Russian gas transit to prevent further income for Russia. He outlined conditions under which Ukraine might reconsider. Additionally, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine would end on January 1.
- Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić confirmed Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is set to meet Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin on Monday, December 23, following Ukraine's decision to halt Russian gas transit.
