US House of Representatives introduces alternative bipartisan bill to assist Ukraine
A bipartisan group of moderate US House lawmakers unveiled a bill to provide additional funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. It also contains measures to strengthen US border security
This was reported by The Hill.
The article states that the proposal was made to break the deadlock on aid to Kyiv "amid warnings that Ukrainian forces are running low on weapon supplies."
Republican Brian Fitzpatrick, who participated in the negotiations on the new bill, said he would have voted for the Senate alternative with $95 billion to help Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. He acknowledged that Speaker Mike Johnson "is facing difficult terrain in the House," so the new bill should be a compromise for everyone.
The draft law, in particular, calls for strengthening security measures at the US border, which is what House conservatives and Speaker Mike Johnson personally want, as he refused to vote on the document previously adopted by the Senate.
The Defending Borders, Defending Democracies Act provides for the allocation of $66.32 billion to the US Department of Defense to support countries in a state of war. It also includes about $47 billion for Ukraine, $10 billion for Israel, $5 billion for the Indo-Pacific region, and $2 billion for the operations of the US Central Command.
