Germany prepares €400 million emergency aid package for Ukraine
Germany is set to approve a military aid package for Ukraine worth nearly €400 million in response to the worsening situation on the frontlines
This is stated in a letter from the German Finance Ministry, which was obtained by Reuters.
"In view of the continuously deteriorating military situation in Ukraine, there is a serious risk that Ukraine, without significantly increased material support, could be defeated in its defense campaign," the letter said.
Reuters reports that the Ministry of Finance, at the request of the Ministry of Defense, is seeking approval for additional spending from the budget committee of the lower house of parliament.
The letter stated that the unplanned need for approximately €397 million has only come to light in recent weeks, fulfilling the constitutional and budgetary criteria for an unforeseen expenditure.
According to the Ministry of Finance, this requirement must be fulfilled immediately for the measures to be implemented in 2024 so that they can have an impact during this year.
- In early September, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Berlin had ordered 17 IRIS-T air defense systems for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
