Germany orders 17 IRIS-T air defence systems for Ukraine - Scholz
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Berlin had ordered 17 IRIS-T air defense systems for the Ukrainian Armed Forces
He announced this during a visit to a military base near Kiel, Bloomberg reports.
Scholz confirmed the German order for additional IRIS-Ts. According to him, Germany will supply Ukraine with 17 such air defense systems, while Kyiv has already received 7.
He also stressed that these systems helped Kyiv shoot down more than 250 Russian missiles and drones.
‘This shows that German support for Ukraine is not letting up. We have planned ahead and secured contracts and financing in a timely manner so that Ukraine can continue to fully rely on us in the future,’ the Chancellor stressed.
Scholz assured that Ukraine will receive 24 IRIS-T systems from Germany by the end of 2026: 12 medium-range and 12 short-range systems.
According to an anonymous Bloomberg source, 6 IRIS-T air defense systems will cost about €950 million for the Bundeswehr.
- Germany is preparing to provide Ukraine with 12 IRIS-T air defense systems as part of its plan to transfer two such systems by the end of 2024.
