Volodymyr Artiukh, the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, told Suspilne.

He noted that 221 elderly people lived in the boarding house. Currently, they are being evacuated.

"There are wounded, some of them are in serious condition, they were hospitalized. No one was killed," said Artiukh.

According to the staff of the institution, 24 people were on the 5th floor. The main impact was on the upper floors of the facility.

Later, the Sumy Regional Military Administration clarified that one person died in hospital from his injuries, and 9 others were injured.

At 18:05, the State Emergency Service (SES) press service reported 12 casualties.

"The technical and 5th floors were partially destroyed. 147 people were evacuated from the building. There are no people under the rubble. One person died and 12 were injured," the statement says.

Five buses, including two from the SES, and two SES medical teams were engaged to transport patients to hospitals and other health care facilities.

At 19:02, the press service of the Sumy Regional Military Command clarified that 13 people were injured in the attack.

They also noted that the nursing home had 221 patients, 87 of whom were mobility impaired.

Zelenskyy's reaction

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the Russian attack on the geriatric boarding house, noting that Ukraine would certainly respond to the Russian army for this terror, and the response would be tangible.

“Rescue efforts are currently underway in Sumy after the Russian bomb strike. It hit a nursing home for the elderly. According to the information available now, there were almost 300 people in the building - more than 200 patients and 60 staff members... We already know about the wounded, at least one person was killed. My condolences. Russia could not but know that this nursing home is not a military base, not a military facility,” the head of state wrote.

He also noted that since the beginning of the day, Russian troops have already used almost 90 guided aerial bombs on the positions of the Armed Forces and on Ukrainian peaceful cities.

  • Earlier this day, the Russians attacked a medical facility in the Sumy region twice.
