Ukraine has potential to become gas hub in Eastern Europe - Energy Ministry
Ukraine is ramping up gas production despite the challenges posed by the ongoing war, which will help ensure a stable heating season
This was shared by Ukraine’s Deputy Energy Minister Mykola Kolisnyk on October 30.
He emphasized that having enough domestically produced natural gas boosts the chances of a smooth heating season and reduces Ukraine's reliance on global markets. Kolisnyk added that Ukraine has a real opportunity to become a gas hub in Eastern Europe.
The increase in gas production has been made possible through equipment upgrades, new technologies, and improved security for gas facilities. The government is also introducing new laws to support the industry and attract investment.
Kolisnyk noted that since the full-scale invasion in 2022, the gas sector has faced many challenges, including the suspension of operations at several fields in eastern Ukraine due to the war. However, the war has also prompted crucial reforms and investments aimed at enhancing the country's energy security.
- Earlier, Ukraine's Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, stated that this winter, like the last one, the country aims to rely solely on its own gas production, without external aid from partners.
