The West - Russia: wishful thinking
There is a fundamental contradiction in the attitude of American politicians toward Russia that they flatly refuse to notice
1. They want and expect Russia to democratize (Trump is an exception, he is more comfortable with dictators because “it is clear who to negotiate with”).
2. At the same time, they not only do not want further disintegration of Russia, but are trying to prevent it in every possible way (“Chicken Kyiv approach” again, this time in relation to the “subjects of the federation”).
In fact, avoiding this disintegration has a much greater impact on the policy of Biden and his entourage towards Russia and Ukraine than avoiding the “third world war.”
In other words, Americans want to see a “liberal democratic empire” in Russia. Or, what is the same, a “liberal democratic prison of nations.” They also expect it to be non-aggressive. All attempts to point out this contradiction that I have seen so far (or made myself) encounter a mental block: you are heard but “not perceived.”
This is a policy of ignoring reality, based on wishful thinking, which is guaranteed not to lead to the expected results, but is guaranteed to produce unexpected results. This is what we see on a regular basis, in particular in the forecasts of American intelligence.
