Putin won't back Lukashenko's another presidential term – Belarusian activist Bulba
Sergei Bulba, head of Belarus 2.0. Robim Razam (Do Together) NGO, noted that Lukashenko’s recent visit to Putin ended in failure, with no support for his next term
He shared his opinions with Espreso TV.
Bulba stated, "Lukashenko’s latest trip to see Putin didn’t go as planned. Putin has no interest in backing his next presidential term. Now, Lukashenko is scrambling to prove his worth to Putin. He was hoping to secure Russia's political backing for the upcoming elections. But the truth is, Belarusians have known for years that since 2010, Lukashenko hasn’t won a single election – he just appoints himself. What he wanted from Russia was financial and political support."
Bulba emphasized that Lukashenko’s grip on power is heavily reliant on Russian financial aid.
"This is why he’s suddenly talking about a supposed invasion of Ukrainian drones into Belarus. Russian propaganda outlets are even accusing Lukashenko of allowing Ukrainian forces to breach the Kursk region by pulling back his troops, which allegedly enabled Ukraine to redeploy its northern forces," Bulba continued.
- On August 9, 2024, Lukashenko and his Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin falsely claimed a Ukrainian drone strike occurred.
- Meanwhile, amendments to the criminal code proposed by Lukashenko himself surfaced on Belarus's national legal portal, including provisions to criminalize threats against the former president.
