Convoy of cars from London’s recycling program arrives in Ukraine
A convoy of 20 cars, provided by London as part of its ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) vehicle disposal program, has arrived in Ukraine
The Guardian reports this.
Over 100 cars have been given to Ukraine, with about half already delivered.
British Ukrainian Aid (BUAID), in partnership with Transport for London (TfL), stated that 13 more vehicles are en route to Ukraine for medical and humanitarian use.
According to the publication, Ukraine faces a severe vehicle shortage, especially near the front line, where regular cars and vans transport the wounded from battlefields and medical facilities to hospitals.
In August 2023, London Mayor Sadiq Khan expanded the Ulez zone, now the world’s largest pollution charging area, covering the entire city. Drivers in non-compliant vehicles pay £12.50 a day to drive in this zone.
Background: ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) was introduced in London in 2020 to reduce harmful emissions, improve air quality, and promote eco-friendly transport.
- On February 24, the London Mayor announced that the city's transport department would modify the Ulez car scrappage scheme, allowing vehicles to be sent to Ukraine.
