Biden may seek new aid for Ukraine by year's end
Senators anticipate that President Joe Biden's administration will seek additional aid for Ukraine later this year and urge Speaker Mike Johnson not to commit to supporting aid to Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene
This is according to The Hill.
Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has called for Speaker Johnson's resignation and urged him not to bring Ukraine aid to the House for consideration this year.
However, as House Democrats did not back her call for Johnson's resignation, Republican senators see no reason for him to rule out further assistance.
"I just think at this point, you can’t tie his hands. He’s the Speaker of the House," said Senate Republican Whip John Thune.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), vying with Thune for the next Senate GOP leader, also believes Johnson should not yield to Greene's demands on Ukraine funding.
"I don’t think Speaker Johnson needs to make any commitments to Marjorie Taylor Greene. I think she’s marginalizing herself and becoming a nonissue," Cornyn commented.
- On May 9, it was revealed that the vast majority of Republicans and Democrats in the House voted against Speaker Mike Johnson's resignation.
