Ukraine's EU accession: diplomats expect fast screening of Ukrainian legislation
Zoriana Stepanenko, Radio Liberty correspondent, has commented on the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU
She spoke about it on Espreso TV.
"We had a brief conversation with Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, who leads Ukraine's delegation. She called this a historic day for Ukraine and many European capitals. Two years ago, on June 23, the EU promised that it would support Ukraine for as long as it takes. In fact, this is the first promise that has been realized. Moving forward, Ukraine aims to complete the screening of its legislation to align with European standards by the end of 2024," Stepanenko said.
According to her, European diplomats also believe the process will be relatively fast: "Thanks to the association agreement and close cooperation, the European Union is well-informed about the situation in Ukraine. So, the screening will happen quite quickly."
Hungary will lead the EU Council in late 2024, so the intergovernmental conference was hurried, Stepanenko explained.
"This marks the formal start of EU accession negotiations. It is important that Budapest does not get a tool to block the negotiations and delay the process. Because the presidency influences the agenda in the European Union," she added," she added.
- On Tuesday, June 25, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the start of accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine.
