"War in Ukraine might continue in 2025": military expert offers possible scenarios
It is most likely that the fighting will continue into 2024 and 2025. This means that Western countries should prepare for the need to offer ongoing assistance to Ukraine over an extended period
Serhiy Zgurets, Defense Express military expert, stated this on Espreso.
“The USA has provided us around $40 billion in military assistance, which makes up only about 5% of our defense budget. Despite this relatively small contribution, the Ukrainian army is undertaking a role that should be shared by all NATO countries and the USA, in restraining Russia. With these limited financial resources, we're primarily securing Europe's safety by sacrificing the lives of our soldiers,” Zgurets said.
Zgurets pointed out that financial concerns aren't critical for the US and Europe.
“The idea that Europe is exhausted is an exaggeration, as is the notion of significant funds being allocated for Ukraine. There are three potential scenarios for the future. First, both sides may reach a point of exhaustion and negotiate. Second, we need to observe the outcomes of ongoing offensive actions and how they impact the Russian Federation and Ukraine in specific theaters of war. Third, the most probable and reasonable concept, in my view, is that military actions will continue into 2024 and 2025,” he added.
He stressed that European nations must adapt to providing long-term support to Ukraine.
“The initial setbacks in the offensive were due to insufficient weapons transfers, delays in deliveries, and lack of ammunition. Additionally, the offensive lacked the active air dominance that NATO countries typically establish. We'll consider all these factors and adjust our approach when communicating with Europeans. Although officials' communication has been sensible, we should remember that media reports don't always accurately reflect the actions of specific countries. However, we see considerable support for our offensive actions and the provision of necessary resources,” he concluded.
